I really recommend purchasing the new War of Ages album 'Arise and Conquer': it is my favourite WOA album to date. Musically and lyrically the album contains many similar motifs to their previous albums (you only need look at the artwork to realise this), but personally I think this album is more of a progression, they have improved on their signature sound. They have really built upon their sound, the riffs sound better, the solos sound better and imo the drumming has improved a lot as well! WOA describe themselves on their myspace page as melodic heavy metal/hardcore and i really think that is a fitting description of them. Aesthetically the riffs sound really cool and seem to draw more upon heavy metal as well as the solos. The guitar solos are incorporated very effectively, really crafted into the overall song and flow from the riffs for maximum impact. The drumming seems also to lean more towards metal drumming than hardcore drumming and generally the drumming is more of a feature in this album, as opposed to the guitars in their previous albums imo.
Lyrically the album concentrates around the familiar themes of spiritual warfare and strength to persevere through the struggles of life. Nevertheless vocally Leroy has done a good job in varying his different growls/shouts and talking; there's even a little singing on 'Arise and Conquer'.
I believe WOA have improved with every album, they just keep getting better. Arise and Conquer is a great metalcore album, I really do think besides Living Sacrifice WOA are the most talented Christian metalcore band around today. They blend heavy metal and hardcore seamlessly and have crafted their own distinctive sound within their genre, many Christian metalcore bands seem to be going for this deathcore sound like LS or WBCC, but WOA is different. I recommend this album to all fans of metal and metalcore.
