Has anyone else bought the new Soul Embraced album 'Dead Alive'? It's awesome, it completely blew me away!!! 'Dead Alive' is an apt name for the album as lyrically the themes of failure and spiritual emptiness run throughout the album. This is also reflected, albeit on a more sinister and shocking level, in the album artwork, which is quite sinister and evil looking. Musically, however, this is an incredible album. Rocky Gray's signature playing is back and sounds as brutal as ever; personally he is one of all time favourite guitar players and his playing on 'Dead Alive' is a breath of fresh air for me in the metal scene at the moment. His solos and shredding are very impressive, definitely passing as face melting imo. Having 'This is my Blood' and 'Immune' I would say 'Dead Alive' beats them both, although I find some of the lyrics on 'This is my Blood' personally more inspiring. Musically though, 'Dead Alive' surpasses their two previous albums. As I haven't got 'For the Incomplete' yet, I am curious to see how the new album compares, but I would take a strong guess, judging by their other two albums, and say it's better! But I can't say for certain at this point.
'Dead Alive', regardless of how it compares to their previous albums, has that unique SE vibe to it. Despite all the songs (bar the instrumetal In Memory) being heavy and brutal there is a good deal of individual character to each song, and that is one of the major strengths of the album imo: SE have crafted an album that is consistent in its quality without compromising on creativity and character. Like the other SE albums 'Dead Alive' is the best of both worlds, it has substance and style. 'Dead Alive' is also more of a genuine metal album than 'Immune', gone are the nu-metal tinges that characterised 'Immune'. Lyrically though 'Dead Alive' isn't a million miles a part from 'Immune'. Lyrical themes are concentrated for the most part on failure and spiritual emptiness, epitomised by tracks Judas I've Become and the Devil's Reflection. Yet songs To End it All, Crawl and Kill This speak of turning back to God and seeking Him for restoration.
Anyway I've only listened to the album a couple of times but I'm loving it, despite being slightly uncomfortable with the imagery of the album artwork. I would definitely recommend this album to metal fans out there!
